"Must see" movies for Christians…must see? Must we see movies? I don’t think so. But an interesting list nonetheless.

“Blazing Saddles”? A “must see” for Christians? It is funny, but still . . .

Am I missing something or is this a weird list made stranger by the lack of a category for “religious” movies?

    You’re missing something!
The list of great, must-see religious films would – I regret to say – be rather short. What we wanted to do was provide a list of films that raise or engage with serious theological issues. Films that can provide a way in to the Christian story and start a conversation. Many of them we’ve tried in our film group, so we know it can be done.
I agree that Christians don’t *have* to see any movies, or for that matter read any books, attend any plays or listen to any music. But Christians do do all of these (and our lives wouls be poorer if we didn’t).
Thanks for the plug — much appreciated!

I’m all for what you are trying to do Richard, but…how exactly does Blazing Saddles “raise or engage with serious theological issus”?

    Well…. ummm…
There’s race & prejudice for starters. And there’s definitely a conversation to be had about toilet humour and the Christian. Martin Luther could come into that one!
But I agree – Blazing saddles is mostly there because we thought it the funniest of its genre. And many Christians could do with laughing more.

ohhkay . . . toilet humour and Martin Luther. At least there weren’t any Cheech and Chong recommendations.
