Bonhoeffer Reclaimed
January 24th, 2006
Dr. Uwe Siemon-Netto offers a provocative challenge….reclaim Bonhoeffer from the leftists who like him [particularly when he agrees with them]:

“Yes, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a strong sinner in this sense of the word, for he was a confessional Lutheran”
Well, that was not exactly Sasse’s point of view…
Good to see that the contemporary “Christian Right” is finally approaching a great thinker though, even if I think that Bonhoeffer can not be hijacked such easily.
Jean-Martin,
Can you direct me to the
Sasse point of view? I have
several of his books, so
maybe I can check them if your reference is in one of them. Thanks!
Carl,
I am not sure Sasse ever took any “official” position towards Bonhoeffer, either by speech or by print. As far as I can recall, they divided after the Barmen Declaration, which Sasse considered to be a “unionistic” document. I guess Bonhoeffer’s contacts with Barth (not exactly a Law-Gospel theologian)worried Sasse. His choice was to be “Old Lutheran” above everything, even the fifht against the Nazi regime.
I am far from home right now, but I’ll try to send more subtantial infos.
