I was recently in Germany and had the chance to visit many of the Luther sites. Here is the view from one of the monastic cells that Luther was given while a monk in the monastery in Erfurt.

I am enjoying your posts of the Luther sites. On this one, what to this day and age appears to be a fire ring in the court yard intrigues me. Do you have any info on its pupose? Maybe I am misjudging its depth and it is a water well.
Our Pastor Loest has hinted at guiding a tour to Luther land in 2008. This a year after the celebration of synod’s and Frankentrost’s 160 anniversary.

McCain: I believe that is a well. I did not walk out to look at it, but I would strongly suspect that is what it is, not a fire pit. That might explain what appears to be the iron grating, to prevent somebody from falling into it? You will enjoy your tour of Luther sites with Pastor Loest and no doubt will receive a very informative and meaningful tour from him.
