I’m very happy to announce that the first volume of Johann Gerhard’s LOCI THEOLOGICI is now available in English. Gerhard’s "Loci" is, in my opinion, the most comprehensively well-done presentation of Lutheran doctrine available, from anyone, at anytime. Gerhard does use the Scholastic method to engage his opponents, chiefly the Roman Catholics, but also Calvinists, but…what makes this massive work of systematic doctrine unique is how Gerhard mines the treasures of the church fathers to establish that Lutheranism is not something "new" but the old faith of the catholic and apostolic church restored and renewed. There will, God willing, eventually be over 15 volumes in the series. This first volume deals with Theology and Scripture, offering a brief introduction to theology, and then a massive exploration of the doctrine of Divine Revelation and Scripture.

If you want to learn more about these books, and how to order them, please visit the Concordia Publishing House web site.

Note to fellow Lutheran bloggers: If you would so kind as to spread the news, far and wide, that would be great. Obviously, we don’t expect to be selling these to the tune of the "Da Vinci Code" but….publicity would be welcome and we would like to see these get out there into people’s hands.

Thank you for this gift to the church. I read the Christological and Lord’s Supper portions of the Loci in Latin years ago. As a Latin hack, I appreciate the accessibility of this wonderful work which is not only thorough, small c catholic, but very pastoral. It is a model for anyone seeking to be confessional and pastoral, the two being complimentary, not contradictory.

I have been waiting for this and subsequent volumes for some time. I am glad they are finally coming out.
By the way, this is one of the best-looking books I have held in quite a while–good quality and beautiful cover design.

McCain: Thanks, I actually print each one of those myself, by hand.

McCain, this is just about the coolest thing ever! I read the treatise on anthropology that CPH published in the 60s, but wow, the whole thing! How wonderful!!!!

I ordered mine a couple of months back and it finally came today. Between supper and going to my daughter’s middle school graduation I read the first 35 pages or so and WOW. It is just fantastic. It is such a blessing to have this fabulous resource. Keep em coming. I’m telling everyone I know to buy a copy! Great.

I just talked the Biola University (where I go to school) library into purchasing a copy! How about that! An Evangelical University being one of the only three libraries in the world to carry it (along with Valparaiso and the library of Congress)!
