Begging the Question
February 1st, 2007
"Vista hardly rocked my world during weeks of testing. It’s a fine Windows upgrade, but it’s also a shameless rip-off (and not quite the equal) of another major operating system, Apple Computer’s Mac OS X. That begs the question: Why not just use OS X?"

Are you running XP or Vista under virtualization?
McCain: XP, but am ready to install Vista. We never adopt first releases of any software at CPH. Far too many bugs. Better to wait.
re: Virtualized Vista…
Be forewarned that MS has limited the license of the Home versions of Vista, such that they cannot be legally run in a virtual machine (see this article)
Bill Gates ought to keep his focus on his philanthropy, ’cause his recent pronouncements about Vista & OSX have just been embarrassingly absurd.
Wasn’t the original Windows a shameless ripoff of the original Mac too?
Why not just use OS X
Hardware costs are the major factor for most people, I should think.
Now, if only there were some way of enjoying the benefits of a rock-solid Unix-based system on PC hardware, and with the additional benefits of software freedom – i.e. not needing permission from Bill Gates or Steve Jobs to turn your computer on – then we’d be getting somewhere…
The main reason people run PC is you can buy so much more machine in PC for the same money as a mac – and there are significantly more numerous applications for PC.
McCain:
“Significantly more numerous applications” — really? There really are so many more basic programs out there that are most often used: Microsoft Word, mail clients, etc.? That argument really doesn’t hold up to closer analysis. More programs doesn’t mean better programs. The best programs for all computer functions are fully available for the Macintosh and in many cases better on the Mac.
More machine for the money? That’s been proven actually not to be true either. If you try to buy a PC equipped with the same functionality and performance as a Mac out of a box, you will be hard pressed not to pay actually more than you do for a Mac. You can buy cheaper PCs, but not better.
Hardware costs? Well, I suppose that argument still holds a few drops of water. But with the Mac Mini starting at $599 & the iMac starting at $999, I think it’s safe to say that you won’t get much more bang for the buck from Dell (at least not for the same level of hardware/horsepower), or possibly from building your own (although that’s really the province of getting exactly the components you want more so than for cost like it was around 10-15 years ago…).
Ubuntu (which is quite a bit more approachable than straight Debian) is quite good. Not as good, or as easy IMO, as OS X, but still quite a preferable alternative to Vista.
