Sancta Missa: Latin Mass Tutorial-With Videos

Those whose knees go weak and hearts start to flutter and eyes grow weepy at the thought of a Latin Mass will love this site. I find it interesting for other reasons. The coolest thing I picked up by looking at some of this was how properly to use a rope cincture. There are videos of everything and you can watch the priest vest himself, while incanting the required Latin prayers for each piece of vestment. Watching him put on the cincture reminded me of how hard I found it trying to do the required knots for the knot tying merit badge in Boy Scouts. It was not a pleasant memory. Note to: FE, WW and BM: knock yourselves out guys! On a more serious note: the site provides the Latin of the Mass in one column and the English in another, offering one of the most instructive glimpses into why, precisely, Luther reformed the Mass. The Canon of the Mass is the heart of the Mass and the heart of the problem and why Lutherans confess that the Roman Mass is truly "the greatest and most horrible abomination" since it conflicts with the chief doctrine of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, on account of Christ alone.

Pr. McCain,
I have a thought, would they bring back the wearing of the veil for women entering the church? I remember women in the RC Church wearing veils when they enter the church. This is also the practice of some Pentecostal groups and Brethren groups.
LPC
McCain: I’m going to take a pass on this one. I do see women wearing veils at the EWTN televised masses that I catch sometimes channel surfing about the stations.
The prayers of the Tridentine Rite are beautiful. I love the closing reading from the Gospel of Saint John in praise of the Eternal Word.
The Holy Sacrifice that you find “abominable” is of course also present in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy.
I look forward to attending the Tridentine Rite in my area.
Some women on the EWTN televised Masses do wear veils, some don’t. I don’t see that it will become a requirement.
Christine,
That is my point, today the veil is optional. When I was growing up I was given the impression that it was a rule. I was wondering if the traditionalists would lobby for such a practice to be a requirement. Of course, who knows. It was just a thought that crossed my mind.
Lito
Lito, according to Dr. Edward Peteres, an American lay canon lawyer, there is no canonical requirement that women cover their heads in church today.
Personally, I don’t foresee anyone lobbying to make it mandatory in the Tridentine rite.
I will be attending a traditional Latin Mass this evening to celebrate the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Before and during Mass, I will pray for you and for all Lutherans. I happened upon your site through a Google search this morning and, after being heartened by your response to the ECLA action on clergy in homosexual “unions,” was very disappointed at the tone of your post on the Latin Mass. Please consider that the rejection of Peter as the visible head of the Church leads ineluctably to such problems as we have seen in the Episcopal Church and the ECLA. “The Devil may quote scripture for his purpose,” as Shakespeare said, and even the clearest pronouncements of Scripture can be “interpreted” in many different ways. That is why there are so many different Protestant bodies.
The Latin language is beautiful and a sign and means of unity. Its use in liturgy binds us across languages and cultures as well as to those who used this particular form of the Mass in the past. Please show some respect and understand the implications of what you post.
Pastor McCain,
How did you come upon this site?
McCain: I use New Advent’s Roman Catholic blog reader. NewAdvent.org
From the book of Concord of today’s readings.
“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him” (John 3:17).
This is a very confusing verse if I use it as a defense statement before our Creator as You may have to save me because of this verse. This verse really hit me when translated the Greek version of the Gospel of John.
I am LCMS baptized LCA taught theologically and presently wholly Catholic and I am looking forward to going to my first Sancta Missa.
When I first went through RCIA, I was shocked, that the LCMS I had just left was more catholic in the days of my childhood confirmation times, than the catholic church I was attending.
We both need to get back to our going to church and worshiping our Lord, rather than the last week of my experiences.
I believed the following statements with all my mind.
The more serious the sin and the more often committed, the greater is this induced darkening of man’s most precious possession which makes him most like God, his ability to think. Sinner do not think, they emote and then write learned volumes defending their irrationality.
Father, you created me and put me on earth for a purpose. Jesus You died for me and called me to complete Your work. Holy Spirit, You help me carry out the work for which I was created and called. In Your presence and name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I begin my meditation. May all my thoughts and inspirations have their origin in You and be directed to Your greater honor and glory.
May the power of the Cross, which produces the Grace of Wisdom of Our Lord and Savior Jesus in the Eucharist continue in this ministry.
During my 18 months in the VA mental hospital, I wrote this prayer.
By the Grace of God, We turn our wills and lives over to HIS care as we understand HIM. Bless us with the courage and strength to trust, that what ever comes to us today is because of YOU. Bless us with strength and courage to commit and respond to YOUR baptized desires within us and to interact with others as though we are interacting with YOU. Bless us with the power of discernment in the name of our Lord and Savior JESUS, AMEN.
May the Christ in both of us meet someday. Untill then may we both continue to say the LORD’S prayer for each and all of us.
God’s Peace in Christ our LORD be with us

Pastor Mccain,
Since the mass was present at the time of the apostles you must have to take the unfortunate stance that supposed “Catholic church apostasy” also took place during the life time of the apostles. In addition, before commenting on Catholicism and bearing false witness against the one Church Christ left behind you should read the catholic catechism. Your “reformation” has led to 33,000 protestant denominations. So much for one Absolute Truth.
