Blue Rondo a la Turk
February 22nd, 2009
Dave Brubeck‘s music, particularly his album, “On Time,” was also standard fare in my house growing up. My mom would leave the house and Dad would put Brubeck on the stereo and crank it up. He would sit with my brother and me and have us clap out the rhythms to Brubeck’s music, which is some of the most unique in all of Jazz [go ahead, try it]. Here is one of Brubeck’s famous pieces: Blue Rondo a la Turk.

Hmmm. Look like Buddy Holly but don’t sound like him.
cool stuff. Sounds like 9/8 time.
I thoroughly enjoyed both clips. Not a wasted note in either.
Thank you so much for posting this gem!! Many years ago, as I played “Brubeck” on the piano, some accused me of doing it because they would not know when I made an error!!
They were, of course, not correct, just not Brubeck fans. And, of course, I erred when I played!
Again, a great “find” and so gracious of you to share it!
Randy
You are right … I can picture the old cabinet style stereo with speakers, record player, amp, and tuner all in a nice piece of furniture. Listening to Brubeck instantly reminds me of Dad. One of the last gifts I bought Dad was a box set of four Brubeck CDs. I think the last concert I attended with Dad was Brubeck in Midland, MI. He came on to the stage walking like a man very advanced in age, sat at the piano and jammed away like the pro he is. It was amazing. Now my son, Philip, enjoys listening to Brubeck. In fact he had it on last night while doing his homework. Great music spans the generations!
