Update: Well, day one and I survived. I did several things to eliminate e-mail interruptions.

First, turned off notifications of incoming e-mail. No beeps, chirps or flashing messages of incoming mail. Second, I took Entourage offline. Third, I scheduled myself two thirty minute blocks of time I called "communications" and only during those times did I check e-mail, Facebook and Twitter for incoming message. Third, I figured out how to turn off incoming e-mail to my Blackberry. Just shut off the data stream.

Results? Much more focussed on tasks at hands. I felt more "connected" than I have for a long time, and the secret to connection was getting disconnected from the e-mail Tyrant which demands attention, constantly.

Oh, yes, and I noticed the vast majority of e-mail is certainly not urgent, and even more of it is not even important.

I'll try to report back tomorrow. So far, so good.
