Big Tobacco Loses and Nothing Could Be More Richly Deserved

Wonderful news. Big Tobacco, for years, lied and did all they could to cover up the deadly dangers of smoking, and on top of that, did all they could to chemically enhance tobacco to increase its addictive properties. This is such wonderful news, particularly well received by people, such as myself, who have lost loved ones to the ravages of the cancer that tobacco addiction caused.

    What the tobacco companies did back in the day was a bad deal. What is nearly as scandalous is that much of that tobacco money that the states got in the settlement went towards things that had nothing to do with health care.

    Washington has received $1.25 billion in settlement payments from tobacco firms, and the money has consistently gone for public health initiatives and to fight smoking. But that’s not so in other states. Overall, less than 5 percent of the tobacco money has gone for tobacco prevention.
