Pr. McCain,
We ought to remember too that the change in Berlin from Lutheranism to Calvinism also included the persecution of the Confessional Lutheran clergy who refused to renounce preaching and teaching against Calvinist errors and their ordination vow to hold to the Book of Concord. Most notably, of course, Paul Gerhardt, was released by the elector from his pastorate at St Nicolai Kirche in Berlin.
So apparently, reading into this, the elector also wanted to be “iconoclastic” and get rid of the art as well? I believe that if I recall, the elector wanted to rebuild post-war Berlin and imported in many Dutch nationals, all of whom were Reformed/Calvinist. I believe there were just 10′s of thousands of Calvinists in Berlin, yet over a million Lutherans in Berlin and surrounding areas. But the elector was who counted.
