Fantastic! All of these are great selections. I am selfishly pleased to see that you were asked to speak on my own vote: “Lord, Thee I love with All My Heart.” Sure… there are more didactic hymns out there, but it is still my personal favorite.
For those of us who have looked death in the face there is great comfort in praying the last verse. I have sung it to myself in times of great personal danger and I have sung it to others in their hours of grief. There is a tremendous cooperation between the tune and the lyrics in that verse. As the description of death subsides, the melody rises, swells, and develops in complexity at the mention of the resurrection of the dead. This continues until the verse comes to rest in Christ, Our Savior and Fount of Grace, who lovingly hears and grants all of the petitions that are contained in this hymn. …gives me chills.
