Witness – Mercy – Life Together

Yesterday during President Harrison’s installation we saw the formal “unveiling” of a three-fold emphasis that will be marking his leadership as the president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. I’m already starting to see the logo pop up around the Interweb. It is, at this point, a bit of a work in progress, so there has been no final decision yet about what to call it, yet. Theme? Emphasis? Is it a logo, or an emblem? It works well though, whatever you call it. More later.

This banner was at my church is morning in the sanctuary. Before the service, I was analyzing the design and I have to saw that it is very complex and simple. The words describe our life as being God’s Mercy and giving God’s mercy, witnessing (proclaiming the gospel), and living together as brothers and sisters in the Faith. The three circles are the three persons of the Trinity: God who is merciful towards us, the Spirit who give us the power to witness and comes to us through Holy Baptism, and Christ who we live together in the body of Christ and receive his body and blood through Holy Communion.

This design is a great summary of our lives in Christ.

Already made it the theme for my ministry plan 2011. Hope it sticks!

Let’s not call it anything. It’s fine just the way it is. I like it.

Josh, silly bean, you have to call it something. They will get it figured out and decide how they wish to refer to it and let everyone know.

Has it been OK’d for someone say like me to cut and paste this on something like his say blog?

PTM – I have to start by saying I love that you’ve used the phrase “silly bean” above. We Jamesons looked at the mark this evening, and really like it. Clear. Inspiring. Grounded.

Well let’s not call it “not a program.”

Once you hit bureaucracy everything “is” a program. A B. likes to say it’s a movement, it’s grassroots, etc.

Just call it our new program for fixing whatever problem we see we have at the movent.

I vote we call it the 2010 LCMS Synodical Program of Fixing Everything.

Brillant logo. Without trying to clutter it, what if a small baptismal shell in the blue tint area immediately under the cross. These themes flow from our baptismal life in Christ.

I’m going against conventional wisdom here – don’t call it anything. It’s just what the synod does, it’s just what churches do. It’s just what Christians do. No, it’s what The Lord does through us.

Prime example: No Name Steaks. (Pun intended)

It ain’t broke, so let’s not try to fix it.

    I like it!

One minor quibble, though . . . perhaps it is already too late for this, but I strongly recommend inverting the word “mercy” in the emblem – the LCMS already has a logo – so that the combined text more naturally reads “Witness, Mercy, Life Together” as intended. Right now, it looks (to me) like “Mercy, Witness, Life Together” instead.

Also, can someone please clarify what appears on either side of the chalice in the “Life Together” portion of the graphic?
