Take a look at this interesting study of the Nicene Creed. I encourage you to use this and walk through the various articles and phrases of the Creed, look up the corresponding recommended Bible verses, and study them in The Lutheran Study Bible, and you will have a very rich and rewarding experience with God’s Word. Thanks to Michael Mapus for sending me this information.

When I confess the creeds during the Divine Service, I find myself closing my eyes, folding my hands, and praying the creeds. It is a deeply devotional and spiritual moment for me at that point and as I say each phrase a whole host of thoughts and images race through my mind. I see images of each of the events confessed. I think of the historic circumstances why each phrase was chosen and think of the church fathers, particularly Athanasius, who sacrificed so much to protect, defend and confess the faith so that we today would be rightly worshiping and confessing the Holy and Blessed Trinity, all glory to Him, for ever and ever!

This was prepared by Richard Gilbert, from Hacienda Hts. California. He suffers from severe MS and put this together about 10 years ago. WHAT A GEM! It is posted for public use. Please remember Brother Gilbert in your prayers!

    Great read. Reading the texts proving the Holy Spirit’s procession also from the Son, it is hard to believe that the Eastern Orthodox deny it.

    I prefer the Nicene Creed to the Apostle’s creed. First, we know the history of this creed more so than the other creeds. Second, it is more “substantive” then the Apostles creed.

    To those to make the claim “No Creed but the Bible” don’t understand how biblical this creed is and if they disagree with this creed they are disagreeing with Holy Scripture.

    Thanks for this Pr. McCain, I cross-posted to my site (giving full credit to both you and Brother Gilbert).

    It’s sad when you hear all the “deeds, not creeds” folks thumbing their nose at the creeds. There truly is a lot of gold in them. Another reason I’m quite proud to call myself a Lutheran (again).

    Pr. McCain,

    May I have permission to post this at the forum, giving credit to you, of course?
    Even though it just may get ‘someone’s’ goat…

    Paul, I have shared the e-mail version I just received with some to include how to link into the ESV. I did that to facilitate things for those e.g., mil types, who are in situations where they can’t physically access Scripture (book) easily but have computer access.

    I sometimes think of the many Christians, including the Church underground, saying the same words. It is a way of solidarity with others who believe in Christ.

    What an excellent piece, and, as others have mentioned above, also addresses the superficiality of “Deeds not creeds” and “No creed but the Bible” arguments. Also the peace, love, flowers, dope mentality. I remember thinking in the 60s there are no articles saying I believe in peace, love, justice etc but rather in specific persons, actions those persons (of the Trinity) have taken and institutions they have, well, instituted — which are the means to all the generalities more popular to say. Taking the “for public use” as stated, I posted it on Past Elder, with credit and links. Thanks for this piece.

    @Mark Veenman
    Here’s a brief and interesting article as to why the Eastern Orthodox deny the Filioque:
    By Fr. John Romandies
    http://preachersinstitute.com/2010/10/11/why-the-filioque-is-a-heresy/

    In sum, it either introduces a kind of Semi-Sabellianism or Eunomianism.
