Fun on a Rainy Saturday Morning: Complete Disassembly of my 1911

So…I decided that I needed to learn how to completely detail strip my 1911. This is the result. Now I have to clean it all up and put it back together. I’m glad I have a local gunsmith who can help me out if, no, when I get in a jam. Wish me luck!

For you 1911 lovers/users/geeks: This is a Springfield Loaded model, and in the upper right hand corner of the cloth, you will see the full length guide rod, which I replaced with the standard GI type of guide rod assembly. I’ve not noticed any difference in shooting it with or without the FLGR, and I hate having to having to have an allen wrench around to do a simple field strip. I’m also going to replace the ILS mainspring housing system on this thing. Just more junk to break. So, here’s the before picture, with the 1911 in pieces:

And here’s the after shot with the new Wilson mainspring housing and maxi-well installed:

My wife would make me most uncomfortable if I got Hoppes No.9 and Break Free on a tea towel. Yours must be most understanding. :>D

      : )

She has resolved herself to the fact that I have my little set of cleaning cloths. What she hates is when I stink up the laundry room with No. 9. I love the odor.

I bet you can break your Glock down faster than I can break my Glocks down.

Love my Glocks. Love my 1911.

Ahh… weapon PMCS (Prevenative Maintenance Checks & Services). There is something calming and regenerative about weapon cleaning. :P

Same question, different guy – where did you get the grips? Nice. Cost? – if you don’t mind.

Oh, and all the weapons cleaning around here must take place in our garage – an unattached one. This is really lousy after pheasant hunting in Dec. or Jan. Or after going to the range anytime in the winter etc.

Brother Ben….I’ve switched over to Ballistol and this has gone a LONG way toward appeasing “She who must be obeyed.” Funny, she didn’t like the brake cleaner I’ve been using on my M4 Carbine. And even more mysteriously, she does not consider Hoppes 9 a wonderful fragance. Go figure. Women. What can you say?

      I didn’t know you were a gun-enjoyer.

We ought to start a Facebook group devoted to “LCMS Pastors Who Enjoy the Shooting Sports.”

      In fact, consider it done.

But it is worth it – I love my wifey! And she lets me have nice toys and time to use them.

Yep, Ruger GP100 .357, Ruger SR9, Mossberg 500 for deer hunting, Mossberg Silver Reserve for Pheasants. Marlin 1894 chambered in .357 for plinking and playing cowboy (much fun having the sidearm and rifle in the same caliber) – and a few more. No 1911 now, I think that I would be buying one just so I could say I had a 1911.

New firearm purchases must go through a strenuous course of, um, explanation to fit into the family budget. For example, my son’s birthday present was the little Rossi single shot with multiple barrels. He just turned one, but… the reasoning to buy it now – it was on sale! His big sisters will get to use it very soon! So it met the criteria. Laying down the $ for a 1911, won’t fly.

Now as for the Facebook thing. If you were to post an article on your blog extolling the virtues of Facebook for those who enjoy shooting sports, support our right to bear arms etc., then you might get some real Luddites to come along for the facebook ride.
