Here is the fascinating story of how scientists used St. Nicholas’ skull to do a reconstruction of his face, and the results look identical to an ancient icon of Nicholas of Myra. Read the story here. Here is what Nicholas looked like, first the reconstruction of his head and face based on the analysis of his skull, then below it, an ancient icon of Nicholas:

    I love this stuff. I just wish somebody was doing this systematically with available skulls, especially those of historical figures from before the time of photography.

    McCain response: Yes, that would be wonderful. For instance, Luther.

    @Lars Walker
    Of course, in Luther’s case we’ve got his death mask and many, many paintings of him, so we can be pretty certain of his facial features.

    This is fabulous. I have a CPH children’s book by Julie Stiegemeyer about Nicholas of Myra that I read to my 3 very small children. It’s my own little way of introducing the truth behind the legend before society completely hijacks their brains with the completely secular alternative. What a wonderful piece of Christian history! Praise God for all His saints that have been a service to the church and world – and especially this December, for Saint Nicholas!

    He looks a bit like singer Kenny Rogers, post-op.
