A Thrill Going Up the Leg of Lutherans Who Look Longingly Across the Tiber

This report is making the rounds in various Lutheran discussions and blogs giving some closeted Romanists in Lutheran clerical collars a thrill up the leg. Let’s once again simply remind everyone that, no, Rome has most certainly not changed its core positions and beliefs on the very essential heart of the Gospel: justification by grace through faith alone. So, before we hear too many weepy dreamy posts about “reunification” everyone please just settle down and take two big reality pills and get a long night’s sleep. Keep in mind that having a Pope and elaborate liturgical finery and so forth is no formula for faithfulness. There is only one “formula” for that: fidelity to the Word of God, and we Lutherans confess that Word is purely taught and explained in the documents contained in this book. We welcome Roman Catholics, at any time, to join us in what is truly the evangelical and catholic confession of the church universal. Remember also that what is uniquely catholic is not necessarily Roman and what is (in terms of doctrine) uniquely Roman is most certainly not catholic. Let’s hear the man himself tell us about the thrill up the leg

What Lutheran could possibly desire reunification with the Roman church? The idea is simply outrageous. We don’t share a common religion, much less a common confession. I feel so much sorrow for the poor people who are trapped in false religions and very seriously hope and pray that God by the power of His Spirit will create in them true faith in the Gospel. Moreover, it’s not as if Lutherans and Catholics are both erring groups that could benefit from compromise with the other. Confessional Lutherans, by God’s wonderful grace, are the possessors of the true, pure doctrine. The Romans are the ones who have perverted the Gospel into pagan work-righteousness. Any talk of uniting with the Romans is absolutely grotesque. God forbid! And may God preserve the saving faith of every faithful Lutheran pastor and layman and protect us from all the Devil’s agents, especially the Pope and his slaves!
